It’s been a milestone week for Rivian and for electrification.
Coming together with Tesla to adopt the North American Charging Standard opens more fast charging for more EV drivers. Today, we have another announcement to share that reinforces our commitment to an open EV ecosystem — we’ve acquired A Better Routeplanner (ABRP), the world’s most popular consumer EV route planner, and we are committed to continuing its development for all EV drivers.
ENHANCING EV TRIP PLANNING
Robust and reliable navigation is core to giving EV drivers more confidence as they explore. Rivian’s upcoming software release will bring exciting changes to Rivian trip planning, which will now be powered by ABRP. In addition to improving Rivian’s in-vehicle navigation, we will also be introducing the ability to create trips in the Rivian mobile app. Rivian owners will be able to plan their route from the comfort of their own home and send their trip directly to the vehicle’s navigation system.
THE FUTURE OF THE RIVIAN ADVENTURE NETWORK
While the vast majority of charging occurs at home or work, reliable high-speed charging is critical for EVs to fully replace fossil fuel burning vehicles. To enable road trips and charging flexibility, several years ago we made a decision to develop our own charging platform which we now manufacture at our plant in Normal. This DC fast charging platform, which is capable of 300 kW and up to 900 volts, is now being deployed as part of our Rivian Adventure Network (RAN).
With Tesla’s move to open up their well-executed charging connector, we have decided to transition to NACS both in our vehicles as well as for RAN.
RAN is still in the early stages of deployment, with plans to scale to more than 600 sites. Our location strategy will complement North America’s existing fast charging footprint while continuing to extend out to more adventure-forward destinations. While the network is currently only available to Rivian vehicles, we are excited to open it up to all EV drivers soon.
It’s inspiring to see the industry come together like never before to accelerate broad scale electrification. The collaboration between auto manufacturers, the creation of more charging options and better and easier route planning will make EV ownership an easier decision for hundreds of millions of drivers.
